k Restaurante Can Suldat k
Found off the beaten track on the way to Es Canar, Can Suldat looks more like a whitewashed rustic finca than a restaurant. So where do I start, it is such a quirky hidden gem of all proportions. As soon I walked in it reminded me of Jim Morrison’s grave, lashings of candle light, artificial flowers, an eclectic mix of boho décor with random objet d’art including a giant wooden penis with a skull ‘n’ crossbones on it – trust me to spot that one. The courtyard dining area is also laden with a collection of heavily wax dripping candles all under a canopy straddled with vines making it in a rustic sense, quite magical.
The fabulous Swiss owner Peter is a real character. His friends and regulars describe him as a hippy rock ‘n’ roll pirate. He’s got a sparkle in his eye and many, many stories to tell. So, his bedroom is actually in the middle of the restaurant complete with a red velvet rope to prevent proper snooping. I asked him what if he finds someone in his bed at the end of the night, to which he casually replied “it happens”. I love this man. Can Suldat is equally famous for its live acoustic music and locals tend to stumble out as the sun rises. As for the food, it’s a wonderfully small menu presented on a plank of wood, the signature dishes are the Can Sudat entrecote for two to share, a house goulash, a cheese fondue (he is Swiss of course) and Peter’s Salad. There is also a Thai chicken curry on the menu but the main focus are the steaks and the raclette. The steaks come with sauté potatoes and are served with a Café de Paris sauce which is very heavy on the garlic, not a problem for me, but best to have some Smints at the ready the next day. If you are lucky you might get a free tipple of Peter’s homemade limoncello which is sublime and super strong.
He is a fantastic host and would rather stay off the radar so he can continue to take care of his guests and provide an atmosphere that is more like a private party. So if you are looking for a fabulously quirky evening, with live music and an eclectic bunch of people then this is the place to go!
