Beats & Eats with Human Rias

German artist of Iranian descent Human Rias has partnered with EXIT, one of the world’s major festivals, on a humanrights project that supports the fight against oppression in Iran. Together, they bring ‘The Remixes For The People Of Iran’, on Rias’ new 7Rituals label, with all proceeds going to the “Woman, Life, Freedom”, Foundation. 7Rituals first release is a set of individual remixes of the powerful track ‘Baraye’, written and produced by Iranian singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour, inspired by the death of Mahsa Amini and its aftermath. Originally released on 28th September 2022, ‘Baraye’ led to Hajipour’s arrest the following day.

Hajipour was released on bail on 4th October, following a wave of international support and high-profile names sharing Hajipour’s message on their social media accounts and Coldplay playing the track at their Buenos Aires live concert earlier this year. The remix package features a blend of contemporary electronic dance music styles with renowned global artists joining Human Rias in this quest. The first one to be released on January 26th is the Human’s remix. As a member of EXIT Team and one of its resident DJs, Rias has played at all of the festivals in their production including the epic Dance Arena, while being also the only artist to open and close this gargantuan stage with a capacity of 25.000 people!

“Inspired by EXIT’s roots in activism and its similar fight against the oppressive regime in Serbia in the 90’s, it only felt natural for me, as the artist of Iranian heritage, to help my fellow nationals who are facing the same oppression to this very day” says Rias.

A DJ or musician that has surprised you with their cooking skills at home/their home…what did they cook

I don’t actually think a DJ has cooked for me before, it was mostly me cooking.

Your guilty pleasure food. You know you shouldn’t but you always do…

Tacos al pastor. I really shouldn’t consume so many haha.

What is your signature dish?

Arrachera Tacos, I’ve heard mine are best.

If you could have a master-class with a celebrity chef, who’d you pick and why?

Definitely Gordon Ramsey, not because I like his cooking though, I just want to have him go off.

Dead or alive – 3 famous people you would invite around for dinner…

Freddy Mercury, DJ Tennis, Ben Klock.

A dish you have yet to master…

My moms Persian cooking, it will just never get as good.

Your favourite pizza topping

Pistacchio. I’ve come to discover this recently, that pistacchio makes everything taste brilliant.

 Your biggest ever food mistake

Cooking Cacio e pepe, adding a lot of salt to the pasta water, and yes using said water to make the sauce.

A dish you just cannot eat

Snails, definitely a no no.

You get in from the club pissed, dive in the fridge and usually come out with…?

A bottle of Coca Cola, and not from the fridge but a bag of crisps. If that doesn’t cut it and I don’t have bread at home, it’ll be ham between a slice of cheese, or a ham wrapped around a pickle.

The most expensive meal you have ever had?

I’m trying to remember, must have gotten very drunk after seeing the bill!!

My favourite restaurants on the island…

Too difficult to name one, so ill name two: Jondal and Fish Shack (if you know, you know!)
